Vodyanitsa F2P build: How this 5-star Hydro support works with cheap gear

A 5-star character that works well without a 5-star weapon or months of artifact farming sounds too good to be true. Vodyanitsa, the new Hydro catalyst user who arrived in version 7.1, is exactly that kind of exception. Her best low-investment setup runs a 3-star book and an artifact set you can farm on day one.

Who is Vodyanitsa and when did she arrive?

Vodyanitsa is a 5-star Hydro catalyst character. She launched on the Surging Ballad banner on September 23, 2026, as part of Genshin Impact’s version 7.1 update. Her role is support or sub-DPS, meaning she is there to enable the main damage dealer rather than steal the spotlight herself. That makes her a natural fit for a low-cost build.

The cheap build that actually works

Two pieces of gear do all the heavy lifting. First, Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers, a 3-star catalyst that most players have sitting in their inventory. At refinement rank 5, it gives the character you swap to after Vodyanitsa uses her skill a 48% attack boost. You do not need to spend wishes hunting for refinements — copies pile up naturally over time.

Second, the Tenacity of the Millelith artifact set. Its 4-piece effect grants 20% attack to the whole team and 30% shield strength whenever an elemental skill hits an enemy. You can farm this set at the Ridge Watch domain in Liyue. If domain farming feels slow, use the Strongbox feature to convert unwanted 5-star artifacts into Tenacity pieces instead.

For main stats, aim for Energy Recharge or attack percent on the sands, Hydro damage bonus on the goblet, and either crit rate, crit damage, or HP percent on the circlet depending on your weapon and survivability needs. Substats should prioritize Energy Recharge until you hit 180 to 200 percent, then crit stats and attack percent.

Leveling priorities

Get Vodyanitsa to at least level 80 out of 90 before worrying about anything else. Her ascension materials come from the new weekly boss introduced in version 7.1. Exact material counts are not available in official sources yet, so check the in-game material preview or a version 7.1 guide for updates.

For talents, invest in her elemental skill and burst first. Her normal attack can stay low because a support build barely uses it. Talent book domains rotate on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday — the specific book type is tied to the version 7.1 schedule.

Two loadout options depending on your budget

F2P loadout

  • Weapon: Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers (R5) — attack buff for the next character, no resin cost
  • Artifacts: 4-piece Tenacity of the Millelith — team attack buff and shield strength
  • Main stats: Energy Recharge or attack sands, Hydro damage goblet, crit or HP circlet

Mid-spend loadout

  • Weapon: Favonius Codex — generates energy particles for the whole team
  • Artifacts: 4-piece Tenacity of the Millelith — same set, same logic
  • Main stats: Energy Recharge sands, Hydro damage goblet, crit circlet — smoother burst uptime

Other artifact sets can work too. Emblem of Severed Fate is a decent alternative if you already have well-rolled pieces, but Tenacity of the Millelith pulls ahead for a pure support role because the team-wide attack buff is harder to replace.

Teammates that make the most of her kit

Vodyanitsa fits best in teams that want steady Hydro application and appreciate extra attack stats. Some of the strongest pairings include:

  • Odette — a Cryo character who triggers Stellar Glimmer reactions with Vodyanitsa’s Hydro
  • Vesna — another version 7.1 character who may have kit synergies worth testing
  • Bennett — stacks even more attack on top of Thrilling Tales and Tenacity, plus healing
  • Kazuha — groups enemies together and adds elemental damage bonus to the whole team

Common problems and quick fixes

  • Burst not charging fast enough: Switch to an Energy Recharge sands or swap to Favonius Codex. Stay above 180 percent Energy Recharge.
  • She keeps dying: An HP percent circlet adds a lot of survivability. Alternatively, bring a shielder like Zhongli.
  • Thrilling Tales is only R1: Keep wishing on any banner and you will get more copies naturally. R5 is the target.

Should F2P players pull for her?

If you need a Hydro support who can boost your main damage dealer without demanding expensive gear, yes. Her budget build clears most content without issues. Constellations are a luxury — nice to have but not necessary, and not worth pulling duplicates for if you are saving Primogems.

Compared to other Hydro supports like Mona or Kokomi, Vodyanitsa’s niche is the unique attack buff she enables through Thrilling Tales and Tenacity of the Millelith stacking together. That combination makes her a legitimate alternative in teams where those characters would normally compete for the slot.

What about materials?

Official sources have not published exact material counts for Vodyanitsa’s ascension or talents yet. The new version 7.1 boss drops her ascension material on a weekly reset. Talent books come from a domain on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday. Common enemy drops (Fatui agents and similar) are the daily farm. Check the in-game material preview for the most accurate numbers before spending resin.

Once she is built, test her in the version 7.1 events and the current Spiral Abyss rotation. That is where the low-investment setup really proves whether it holds up.
