Honkai: Star Rail system requirements 2025: the 60 GB storage problem and what it means for endgame

That official spec sheet for Honkai: Star Rail says the game needs 20 GB of storage. The truth? You will want triple that before you even finish installing the Chinese and English voice packs. For anyone chasing 36 stars in Memory of Chaos or grinding double-drop events in Simulated Universe, the gap between what HoYoverse publishes and what actually runs on your machine has quietly grown. Here is what changed, what matters, and which part of your PC is probably holding you back right now.

The real specs, side by side

HoYoverse has not updated its official requirements table in a while. The minimum and recommended rows still look the same as they did near launch. But real-world testing tells a different story, especially on storage.

Component Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i3 Intel Core i7
RAM 6 GB 8 GB
GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060
Storage 60 GB* 60 GB*

*HoYoverse still lists 20 GB as the official requirement. That number has not been accurate for a long time. Between the base installation, cached data, and voice-over files for multiple languages, the real footprint sits closer to 60 GB. Anyone who has been playing since version 1.0 has watched that number climb patch after patch.

What minimum actually gets you

A GTX 650 with 6 GB of RAM will boot the game. That is about all it will do reliably. Expect hitches during Ultimate animations and visible stuttering when you walk through the Radiant Feldspar or any of the major space stations. The listed Core i3 is also vague enough to be misleading. A 2nd-gen Clarkdale i3 from 2010 will struggle to feed frames to even a modest GPU. A newer low-end i3, something from the 10th generation or later, makes a big difference. Without specifying which generation, HoYoverse is underselling how much the CPU matters.

The honest floor for a playable experience is higher than the official minimum. You can launch the game on that hardware, but you will not enjoy endgame content on it.

What recommended actually delivers

The GTX 1060 and Core i7 combo is the same target HoYoverse uses for Genshin Impact, which is no surprise given the shared engine. At 1080p on medium settings, this configuration holds a consistent 60 FPS. That stability matters more in Honkai: Star Rail than people give it credit for. Turn-based combat looks forgiving on paper until you need to land a follow-up attack during a Weakness Break window and your frame pacing throws off the timing.

The 8 GB of RAM is the absolute floor. If you run Discord in the background, keep a browser tab open with a map or guide, and maybe stream on the side, 16 GB is the smarter buy. The 8 GB figure assumes nothing else is competing for memory.

Storage is the real problem

A 60 GB install is still 30 to 40 GB smaller than Genshin Impact, so Honkai: Star Rail remains the lighter of the two if you juggle multiple HoYoverse titles. But an SSD is non-negotiable. Mechanical drives introduce load times that add up fast when you are resetting a Simulated Universe run or jumping between Planarcadia zones. Every extra second of loading cuts into your play session. During events that double planar ornament drops, those seconds become runs you simply cannot fit into the same hour.

How your rig changes endgame performance

Frame rate sounds irrelevant to a turn-based game until you push deeper into Pure Fiction or attempt to speed-tune a team for Memory of Chaos. Here are the places where hardware actually affects your clear speed:

  • Weakness Break timing. A steady 60 FPS means follow-up attacks from characters like Topaz or Jade land exactly when you expect them. Dropped frames can make you miss the window entirely.
  • Simulated Universe farming. Faster storage directly translates to more runs per hour. That matters during any double-reward promotion.
  • Pure Fiction enemy waves. When five or six enemies explode into overlapping VFX at once, a low-end GPU starts dropping inputs. The game registers your commands late, which can cost you score thresholds.

If you are stuck on an older Core i3, micro-stutters can throw off your rotation timing. The CPU matters less for raw FPS ceilings and more for frame-time consistency. An uneven frame delivery feels worse than a stable 45 FPS.

4K and high refresh rate

Honkai: Star Rail does not officially support Nvidia DLSS, and HoYoverse has not said whether it plans to add the feature. For 4K or 120 Hz displays, brute force is the only option. An RTX 4070 or equivalent can push those resolutions without much trouble, but anything weaker will need to drop settings or accept a lower frame rate. The game looks sharp at 4K, but the performance cost is steep for what is fundamentally a turn-based RPG.

Playing on Steam Deck and handhelds

The game carries a Steam Deck Verified tag, which sounds straightforward. In practice, the anti-cheat software can cause hiccups, especially during network transitions. Honkai: Star Rail is also not available on Steam, so you need to install it through HoYoverse’s own launcher. There are workarounds for getting it running smoothly on the Deck, but it is not a plug-and-play experience out of the box.

Should you upgrade?

If your machine already holds 60 FPS at 1080p, you are fine. Honkai: Star Rail is not a hardware-intensive title. The people who will see the biggest gains from a small investment are those running integrated graphics or an old mechanical hard drive. A used GTX 1060 and a SATA SSD cost a fraction of what a new 5-star character banner costs and will improve every aspect of how the game feels. For F2P players who are trying to squeeze more value out of their account, that upgrade is a better use of money than pulling for another limited unit.

Before you blame your relic rolls for a missed 36-star clear, check whether your machine is stuttering during Ultimate animations. If it is, a storage swap and a mid-range GPU will fix more of your endgame problems than a better planar set ever could.
