The Down in the Dumps quest in Genshin Impact serves as a pivotal chapter within the In the Dwelling of Life narrative arc, seamlessly following the events of Transplanted From 'Yesterday' to 'Tomorrow'. Players find themselves trapped underground in a Shadow Realm sewer network, stripped of their standard party lineup and elemental abilities. This comprehensive guide outlines every necessary phase, from navigating the subterranean tunnels and acquiring all three essential keycards to finally breaking out back to ground level. At a Glance

  • Prerequisites: Finish Transplanted From 'Yesterday' to 'Tomorrow'.
  • Restrictions: Operating inside the Shadow Realm means party members cannot be swapped, elemental skills are disabled, and players must rely exclusively on the Traveler’s sidearm and basic agility.
  • Key Items: Blue Key Card, White Key Card, Red Key Card, and the Sewer Lift Control Wheel.
  • Rewards: Exquisite Chest, Precious Chest, Luxurious Chest, and direct progression into the Back on One's Feet quest.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Find a Way Out of the Sewer

Begin by venturing deeper into the drainage system. Activate the local Teleport Waypoint, then quickly double-tap the sprint input to slide beneath the obstructing barrier. Fire your weapon at the glowing sigil to pull yourself upward. Collect the Exquisite Chest along your route, grab the Metal Control Wheel, and operate the Rotary Mechanism to force open the subsequent gate, sliding underneath just as it jams.

You will soon arrive at a flooded chamber. Jump onto the wooden plank highlighted by Paimon, then construct a Grappling Gun to traverse the gap. Shoot away any wooden crates blocking your path. If a ledge is too high to reach normally, fabricate a Cube or a Floating Platform (Prime Ice Construct) to gain the required vertical advantage.

Investigate the Control Room

Step inside the Control Room and inspect the Sewer Entrance/Exit Guide resting on the table. This action initiates your next primary goal: gathering all three keycards.

Collect the Blue Key Card

Interact with the Control Console situated near the open portal to secure the Blue Key Card, causing the gate behind you to seal shut. Take that same Blue Key Card to the secondary Control Console to unlock a fresh chamber. Inside, you will quickly realize you still need the card; return to the original console to retrieve it once more. Since the gate is now stuck, simply slide underneath.

Insert the Blue Key Card into the console positioned by the water to drain half of the reservoir and pinpoint the White Key Card‘s position via the Eye of Graeae. Pull the Blue Key Card back out, then walk over to the sealed door down below. Plug it in there to open the entryway, though be prepared—the water level will begin rising rapidly, so act fast. If the next platform proves too high to jump to, simply let the rising water carry you up.

Collect the White Key Card

Step into the newly opened area and pick up the White Key Card from the terminal. Claim the nearby Exquisite Chest, then build a Grappling Gun to fashion an exit route. This path loops you back near your initial entry point; utilize the elevated ledges on the right to reach the water-side console. Insert the White Key Card here. With both the Blue and White Key Cards slotted in properly, the entire body of water will drain away completely.

Collect the Red Key Card

Head downward and trace the corridor until you locate a gate you can slide beneath. The Red Key Card rests on a high platform, highlighted by the Eye of Graeae. Target the blue sigil to haul yourself up. Securing the key triggers an encounter with a hostile Leshy. Eradicate the threat, then turn the Rotary Mechanism to clear the doorway. Ensure you pick up the Precious Chest along this route.

Make your way back to the Control Room and pull both the Blue and White Key Cards out of their respective consoles.

Open the Control Room Door

Now, place all three keycards—Blue, White, and Red—into the main control room door console to disengage the lock.

Explore Up Ahead

Venture through the newly opened portal to discover a Rotary Mechanism missing its handle. The required Sewer Lift Control Wheel is suspended above on a Leshy’s head. Shoot the glass enclosure to release the creature, then defeat it to claim the wheel. Mount the wheel onto the mechanism to force the gate open.

Ride the Elevator and Return to the Surface

Pass through the gate, loot the Luxurious Chest, and step onto the elevator to exit the subterranean depths. Follow the trail to emerge back on the surface. This finalizes the Down in the Dumps quest and automatically triggers the Back on One's Feet mission.

Troubleshooting

  • Is the water rising too quickly? Extracting the Blue Key Card from the drainage console causes the area to refill at a fast pace. Should you find yourself unable to clear a jump, remain stationary and let the incoming water elevate you naturally.
  • Trouble locating the White Key Card? The Eye of Graeae highlights its position on your interface once half the water is removed. Keep an eye out for the glowing marker.
  • Stuck on a tricky jump? Deploy Cube or Floating Platform constructs to boost your altitude, or fabricate a Grappling Gun to latch onto distant footholds.

What to Do Next

Upon finishing Down in the Dumps, you will immediately transition into Back on One's Feet, continuing the In the Dwelling of Life questline. Verify that you have sufficient uninterrupted time to dedicate to this sequence, as the Shadow Realm environment heavily restricts your active party selection.
